History of Sawley

Another long-term project is to produce a history of Sawley, the village in Derbyshire where Geoffrey and Judy Kingscott have always lived. On September 29, 2008, Geoffrey Kingscott gave a talk on the History of Sawley Part One (up to 1259) to the Sawley & District Historical Society, followed up by Part Two (1259 to 1787) in September 2009. He will continue with Part Three on September 27, 2010.

See the website www.sawleyhistoricalsociety.org.uk for further information on these events and on the Society.

The year 2009 marks the 750th anniversary of the granting by Henry III of a charter to Sawley, with the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair.

This was celebrated in style on September 26, 2009, with a day of events. These included a Pageant of Sawley History, written by Geoffrey Kingscott, and the launch of the The Sawley Trail, a 32 -page illustrated booklet of walks round Sawley.
